Indian Motorsport Glossary

A plain-English reference for the terms, acronyms, and jargon used in Indian motorsport — from FMSCI and INDRC to dial-in, parc fermé, and TSD pace notes. Written for racers, organizers, scrutineers, officials, and fans.

ASN
Authorité Sportive Nationale — the FIA-recognized national sporting authority of a country (FMSCI is India's ASN).
Autocross
A timed motorsport event where a single vehicle navigates a short course defined by cones, typically on a sealed surface.

B

BIC
Buddh International Circuit — the FIA Grade 1 circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, that hosted the Indian Grand Prix.
Bracket Racing
A drag racing format where racers declare a 'dial-in' time before each run; the racer closest to (without going under) their dial-in wins.

C

Championship Points
Points awarded to competitors per round based on finishing position; aggregated across a season to determine a champion.
Christmas Tree
The vertical light column at the start of a drag strip used to start races.
Clerk of the Course
The senior official responsible for the on-track running of the event.

D

Dial-In
In bracket drag racing, the elapsed time a racer predicts they will run, declared before the race.

E

Endurance Racing
A long-distance motorsport format (typically 3–24 hours) where multiple drivers share a single car.
ET (Elapsed Time)
The time a vehicle takes to complete a measured drag racing distance (e.g., 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile).

F

FHR / HANS
Frontal Head Restraint (e.g., HANS device) — a tethered safety device that restricts violent head movement in a crash.
FIA
Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile — the world governing body for four-wheel motorsport, headquartered in Paris.
FIM
Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme — the world governing body for two-wheel motorsport.
FMSCI
Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India — the national governing body for motorsport in India, recognized by the FIA and FIM.

H

Hill Climb
A motorsport format where vehicles run individually against the clock up a closed uphill course.
Homologation
Official certification by a governing body that a vehicle, component, or venue meets the regulations for a specific class.

I

INCRC
Indian National Car Racing Championship — the FMSCI national circuit racing series for cars.
Indemnity / Waiver
A signed legal document by which a competitor accepts the risks of motorsport and releases the organizer from certain liabilities.
INDRC
Indian National Drag Racing Championship — the FMSCI-sanctioned national drag racing series for four-wheelers, co-organized by Vroom Motorsports and Speedway Motorsports.
INKC
Indian National Karting Championship — the FMSCI national karting series.
INMRC
Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship — the FMSCI national series for circuit motorcycle racing.
INRC
Indian National Rally Championship — the FMSCI national rally series.

Kari Motor Speedway
A permanent racing circuit near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, used for car and motorcycle racing.

M

Meco Kartopia
A leading karting circuit near Bengaluru, Karnataka, regular venue for INKC rounds.
Medical Self-Declaration
A competitor's signed statement of fitness to compete, often required for entry-level events.
MMRT / MIC
Madras Motor Race Track / Madras International Circuit — India's primary FIA-graded permanent racing circuit, located near Chennai.

P

Pace Notes
Detailed shorthand notes a rally co-driver reads to the driver describing the road ahead — corners, crests, surface, and hazards.
Paddock
The area at a motorsport venue where teams park transporters, set up garages, and prepare vehicles between sessions.
Parc Fermé
A secured holding area where competition vehicles are quarantined under stewards' control before or after sessions; no servicing allowed without permission.
Pit Lane
The lane parallel to the start/finish straight where teams perform pit stops and refueling.
Pole Position
The starting grid position at the front of the pack, awarded to the fastest qualifier.

R

Rallycross
A short-format mixed-surface rally race with multiple cars on track simultaneously.
Reaction Time
The time between the green light on a drag racing tree and the moment the vehicle's front wheels leave the staging beam.
Recce
Reconnaissance — the controlled pre-event drive of a rally route during which crews create or verify pace notes.
Roll Cage
A welded tubular steel structure inside a competition vehicle designed to protect occupants in a rollover.

Scrutineering
Pre-event technical inspection of vehicles and safety gear to ensure compliance with regulations.
Slalom
A short timed event where a vehicle weaves through a line of cones.
Special Stage
A closed-road competitive section in a rally where competitors run individually against the clock.
Staging
The process of positioning a drag racing vehicle precisely at the start line so its front wheels break the staging beam.
Stewards
Senior race officials responsible for enforcing regulations, hearing protests, and issuing penalties.

T

Time Attack
A circuit motorsport format where competitors run individually or in small groups, scored on their fastest single lap.
Timing System
The hardware and software that measures lap times, elapsed times, sector splits, and speeds at a motorsport event.
Transponder
An electronic device fitted to each vehicle that broadcasts a unique ID to timing loops embedded in the track.
Trap Speed
The instantaneous speed of a vehicle as it crosses the finish-line speed trap in drag racing.
TSD Rally
Time-Speed-Distance rally — a navigation rally format where competitors must maintain a target average speed over a route, scored on accuracy not maximum speed.
